14 July Revolution in Iraq overthrows Hashemite monarchy

A military coup led by Brig. Gen. Abd al‑Karim Qasim toppled Iraq's Hashemite monarchy, killing King Faisal II and Prime Minister Nuri al‑Said and declaring a republic.

The overthrow of a key pro‑Western government dramatically altered Middle East geopolitics, heightened Cold War tensions in the region, and helped trigger Eisenhower's decision to commit U.S. forces to Lebanon the following day.
