14th Dalai Lama escapes Lhasa amid the uprising

On March 17 the 14th Dalai Lama secretly left the Potala Palace and fled Lhasa toward India as Chinese suppression of the uprising intensified.

His escape and subsequent exile transformed Tibet into an international issue, affected regional diplomacy (especially with India), and shaped U.S. policy responses toward China and Tibetan resistance.
