21st Amendment ratified, repealing national Prohibition

On December 5, 1933 Utah became the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment, giving it the three-fourths majority required to repeal the 18th Amendment and end national Prohibition.

The ratification ended 13 years of nationwide alcohol prohibition, returned regulatory control over alcohol to the states, and marked a major reversal of federal social policy during the New Deal era.
