Alaska's congressional delegation sworn in after statehood

After Alaska's admission as the 49th state, its elected U.S. senators Ernest Gruening and Bob Bartlett and Representative Ralph J. Rivers were sworn into Congress on January 3, 1959.

Their seating immediately gave Alaska full congressional representation and altered the composition of the Senate and House, completing the state's formal incorporation into the federal government.
