Allied amphibious landing at Anzio (Operation Shingle) begins

On January 22, 1944 Allied forces launched Operation Shingle, making an amphibious landing at Anzio and Nettuno on the Italian coast to outflank German defenses.

The landing was intended to break the stalemate at the Gustav Line and accelerate the capture of Rome, but it led to a prolonged, costly campaign that significantly shaped the Italian front and Allied strategy.
