American First Army launches Battle of Saint-Mihiel

On September 12, 1918, the American Expeditionary Forces under General John J. Pershing launched the Saint-Mihiel offensive against German positions, an operation that concluded successfully by September 16.

As the first large-scale offensive planned and executed by U.S. forces independently, Saint-Mihiel demonstrated American combat capability, strengthened Allied momentum, and elevated the United States' role in shaping the final phase of the war.
