Anthracite coal miners begin major strike in eastern Pennsylvania

On May 12, 1902, thousands of anthracite coal miners in eastern Pennsylvania walked off the job seeking higher wages, shorter hours, and union recognition.

The strike produced widespread coal shortages and set the stage for President Roosevelt's unprecedented federal intervention in labor disputes later in 1902, reshaping the government's role in industrial conflict.
