Anthracite Coal Strike ends with arbitration award

A presidentially backed arbitration commission issued its award on October 23, 1902, ending the anthracite coal strike by granting miners wage increases and reduced hours while leaving union recognition unresolved.

The settlement, achieved after President Theodore Roosevelt intervened to push for arbitration, was a landmark instance of federal involvement in labor disputes and expanded the president's role as a national mediator in industrial conflicts.
