Army–McCarthy hearings begin (Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations)

On April 22, 1954 the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations opened televised hearings into Senator Joseph McCarthy’s conduct and his conflict with the U.S. Army.

The widely viewed hearings exposed McCarthy’s methods to national scrutiny, precipitated the decline of McCarthyism, and shaped the political environment confronted by the Eisenhower administration.
