Battle of Gonzales marks start of the Texas Revolution

On October 2, 1835, Texian settlers at Gonzales resisted Mexican troops sent to reclaim a small cannon, triggering the first armed clash of the Texas Revolution.

The engagement launched a rebellion that ultimately produced the Republic of Texas and created diplomatic and security complications for the Jackson administration, which publicly maintained neutrality while facing strong domestic pro-Texas sentiment.
