Battle of San Jacinto — Texian forces rout Santa Anna

On April 21, 1836, General Sam Houston's Texian army surprised and decisively defeated Mexican forces led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, securing de facto Texan independence.

The victory produced the Republic of Texas and created an immediate diplomatic and political dilemma for Andrew Jackson's administration over recognition and the future possibility of U.S. annexation, shaping Anglo‑American expansion and regional politics.
