Belgium capitulates to German forces

Belgian King Leopold III announced surrender and Belgian forces ceased organized resistance on May 28, 1940.

Belgium’s surrender further accelerated the German drive into France and amplified the urgency for U.S. strategic planning, military preparedness, and diplomatic engagement in response to Europe’s rapid upheaval.
