Black Tom munitions explosion in Jersey City

A massive explosion at the Black Tom munitions depot in Jersey City on July 30, 1916, caused widespread destruction, damaged nearby infrastructure (including parts of the Statue of Liberty), and killed several people.

The sabotage—later attributed to German agents—highlighted U.S. vulnerability to covert foreign attacks on American soil and led to long-term security concerns and indemnity claims that shaped U.S. policy toward wartime espionage and sabotage.
