Boston police go on strike

On September 9, 1919, most of Boston's police force walked off the job after city officials refused union recognition and denied a pay increase.

The strike produced a major public-order emergency, prompted Massachusetts to call in the militia, intensified national debates over labor and public safety, and propelled Governor Calvin Coolidge to national prominence.
