Brownsville affair — Roosevelt orders dishonorable discharge of 167 soldiers

President Theodore Roosevelt ordered the dishonorable discharge of 167 African American soldiers of the 25th Infantry following the Brownsville incident in Texas.

The action, taken without courts-martial, provoked national controversy over race and military justice and remained a lasting stain on Roosevelt's civil-rights record until the Army formally exonerated the men decades later.
