Brownsville Affair: Shootings in Brownsville, Texas

On August 13, 1906 gunfire in Brownsville, Texas left a white bartender dead and a police officer wounded, and local authorities immediately blamed Black soldiers of the U.S. 25th Infantry, touching off the Brownsville Affair.

The incident precipitated a national racial and military controversy that drew President Roosevelt into a contentious investigation and ultimately led to punitive action against Black soldiers, becoming a lasting stain on Roosevelt's civil‑rights record.
