Burundi gains independence from Belgium

Burundi formally became independent on July 1, 1962, achieving sovereignty after the end of Belgian administration.

Burundi's independence, simultaneous with Rwanda's, reshaped diplomatic and security considerations in Central Africa during the Cold War and required new U.S. bilateral relations and policy responses.
