Castle Bravo thermonuclear test at Bikini Atoll

On March 1, 1954, the United States detonated the Castle Bravo hydrogen device at Bikini Atoll with a yield far larger than expected, producing widespread radioactive fallout that contaminated nearby atolls and the Japanese fishing vessel Daigo Fukuryū Maru (Lucky Dragon No. 5).

The unexpectedly high yield and resulting civilian contamination provoked international outrage, exposed shortcomings in U.S. nuclear testing estimates, heightened global concerns about atmospheric testing, and influenced later U.S. nuclear policy and test restrictions.
