Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Soviet Union

An explosion and fire at Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near Pripyat released large amounts of radioactive material across the USSR and Europe.

The accident became the worst civilian nuclear catastrophe in history, forcing the Reagan administration to monitor fallout, assess public-health and environmental risks, and intensify scrutiny of Soviet transparency and nuclear safety amid Cold War tensions.
