Clinton apologizes to Chinese leadership for Belgrade embassy bombing

President Clinton placed a phone call to Chinese leader Jiang Zemin to express regret and apologize for the U.S.-led NATO airstrike that destroyed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade and caused civilian deaths.

The apology was a key diplomatic effort to defuse a major bilateral crisis with China after the bombing inflamed public anger and threatened U.S.-China relations during the Kosovo conflict.
