Clinton condemns India's first 1998 nuclear test at Pokhran

After India carried out a nuclear detonation at the Pokhran test site, President Clinton issued a public condemnation of the test and signaled that the United States would respond diplomatically and with sanctions consistent with U.S. law.

The test marked a major setback for global nonproliferation efforts and forced the Clinton administration to confront a new South Asian nuclear capability with diplomatic and economic measures.
