Congress establishes the Council of National Defense

On August 29, 1916 Congress created the Council of National Defense to coordinate industry, transportation, and labor for national security needs, with President Wilson to appoint its initial members.

The council provided a federal mechanism for mobilizing and coordinating economic and industrial resources, laying organizational groundwork for U.S. wartime mobilization during World War I.
