Convention of 1836 convenes at Washington-on-the-Brazos

Delegates from Texas settlements met at Washington-on-the-Brazos to begin drafting a declaration of independence and a constitution for a new Republic of Texas.

The convention launched the formal process of Texian independence, creating a political entity whose recognition and future annexation became a significant diplomatic and domestic issue for the United States.
