CORE Freedom Rides depart Washington, D.C.

An integrated group of civil rights activists organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) departed Washington, D.C., on interstate buses to test and challenge segregation in Southern bus terminals.

The Freedom Rides escalated the civil rights struggle into a national crisis that exposed violent Southern resistance to desegregation and forced the Kennedy administration to confront interstate civil-rights enforcement.
