Deadline for Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait expires without compliance

The Jan. 15 deadline for Iraq to withdraw its forces from Kuwait expired with Saddam Hussein refusing to comply.

The missed deadline removed the principal diplomatic option under UN Resolution 678 and effectively cleared the way for the U.S.-led coalition to commence military operations against Iraq.
