Death of Secretary of State John Hay

John Hay, U.S. Secretary of State since 1898, died at his home in Newbury, New Hampshire on July 1, 1905.

Hay's death created a sudden vacancy in a key Cabinet post during active U.S. diplomatic engagement abroad, forcing Roosevelt to select an experienced successor to maintain continuity in foreign policy.
