Department of Justice files antitrust suit against Standard Oil

On January 15, 1906 the Roosevelt administration, through the Department of Justice, filed a civil suit under the Sherman Antitrust Act against the Standard Oil Company seeking to dissolve its monopolistic combinations.

The suit was a landmark assertion of federal antitrust enforcement against major trusts and set the legal course that culminated in the 1911 Supreme Court decision to break up Standard Oil.
