Distribution Act signed into law

On July 4, 1836, President Andrew Jackson signed the Distribution Act authorizing the quarterly distribution of federal surplus revenues to the states.

The act redirected federal surpluses to state governments and local banks, expanding credit and contributing to the speculative boom often cited as a factor leading to the Panic of 1837.
