Eisenhower signs the National Defense Education Act

President Eisenhower signed the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) into law, providing federal funding for education in science, mathematics, and foreign languages and establishing student loan programs.

The NDEA was a major Cold War–era federal investment in education aimed at strengthening U.S. scientific and technological competitiveness after Sputnik and expanding access to higher education.
