Evacuation of Allied forces from Dunkirk (Operation Dynamo) begins

On May 26, 1940, British and Allied commanders initiated Operation Dynamo to evacuate surrounded troops from Dunkirk’s beaches to Britain.

The large-scale evacuation signaled the near-collapse of Allied continental resistance and forced Roosevelt’s administration to consider how best to supply and aid Britain while managing U.S. neutrality.
