Execution of Romanian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu

Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife Elena were executed on December 25 after a summary trial following their overthrow in Romania's December revolution.

The violent end of Ceaușescu's regime marked one of the most dramatic collapses of communist rule in Eastern Europe and intensified the rapid geopolitical changes the Bush administration faced at the close of the Cold War.
