Fidel Castro's forces enter Havana, overthrowing Batista regime

On January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro's rebel column entered Havana as Fulgencio Batista fled, effectively toppling the Batista government in Cuba.

The Cuban revolution's success immediately reshaped U.S. policy considerations in the Western Hemisphere and set the stage for the deterioration of U.S.–Cuba relations that would become a major Cold War challenge for the Eisenhower administration.
