Fireside Chat: On the European War

President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered a nationally broadcast 'Fireside Chat' addressing the outbreak of war in Europe, urging calm and declaring the United States would remain neutral while sympathizing with victims.

The broadcast articulated and reinforced the administration's neutrality stance, shaped public opinion at the outset of World War II, and demonstrated FDR's use of radio to directly frame U.S. policy in a crisis.
