Franco declares victory; Spanish Civil War effectively ends

On April 1, 1939, Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces declared victory and the Spanish Civil War effectively ended with the collapse of the Republican government.

The war's end established a fascist-aligned regime in Spain, reshaped European diplomatic calculations on the eve of World War II, and posed a challenge to Roosevelt's neutrality and refugee policies.
