Geneva Accords signed ending First Indochina War

Delegates at the Geneva Conference signed accords on July 21, 1954, establishing cease-fires and temporarily partitioning Vietnam at the 17th parallel.

The accords ended French colonial fighting in Indochina and created a temporary north–south division in Vietnam that set the diplomatic and strategic context for increased U.S. engagement in Southeast Asia.
