Germany launches Operation Barbarossa; Roosevelt condemns the invasion

On June 22, 1941 Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a public statement condemning the attack and expressing U.S. sympathy for the Soviet government.

The invasion destroyed prospects for a negotiated settlement in Europe and pushed Roosevelt to move the United States toward providing material support to the Soviet Union, fundamentally reshaping Allied alignments in World War II.
