Great Galveston Hurricane makes landfall and devastates Galveston, Texas

A powerful hurricane struck Galveston on September 8, 1900, destroying much of the city and killing an estimated several thousand people, making it the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

The catastrophe destroyed a major port city, produced massive loss of life and property, and spurred changes in coastal engineering, local rebuilding efforts, and national attention to disaster relief and preparedness.
