Hawaii admitted as the 50th state; presidential proclamation signed

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the proclamation admitting Hawaii into the Union as the 50th state on August 21, 1959, following Congress's passage of the Hawaii Admission Act.

Hawaii's statehood completed the modern 50-state union, altered political representation and voting dynamics, and strengthened the United States' strategic and military posture in the Pacific during the Cold War.
