Hideki Tojo appointed Prime Minister of Japan

On October 18, 1941, General Hideki Tojo was appointed prime minister and minister of war of Japan.

Tojo’s rise installed a hard-line, militarist leader at Japan’s helm during the tense months before Pearl Harbor, shaping Japanese policy and heightening U.S.–Japan confrontation that would soon lead to war.
