Irish Free State formally established

On December 6, 1922 the Irish Free State came into existence under the terms of the 1921 Anglo‑Irish Treaty, replacing British rule over most of Ireland.

The creation of the Free State ended a major phase of the Anglo‑Irish conflict and raised diplomatic and recognition questions for the Harding administration regarding relations with the new dominion and ongoing Irish civil strife.
