Israeli airstrike attacks Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor

On June 7, 1981, Israeli warplanes bombed and severely damaged the Osirak nuclear reactor near Baghdad; the Reagan administration publicly condemned the attack.

The strike intensified Middle East tensions, raised international non‑proliferation and diplomatic concerns, and forced the Reagan administration to navigate delicate U.S.–Israel relations and global responses to covert nuclear programs.
