Japanese air raid on Darwin, Australia

On February 19, 1942, Japanese carrier-based aircraft launched a large-scale raid on Darwin, killing hundreds, sinking ships in the harbor, and destroying aircraft and infrastructure.

The attack marked the first and largest Japanese air strike on Australia, exposed vulnerabilities in Allied defenses in the Southwest Pacific, and accelerated U.S.-Australian military cooperation and redeployment of forces.
