Japanese forces occupy southern French Indochina

Imperial Japanese troops moved into and occupied southern provinces of French Indochina, expanding their military presence beyond earlier northern footholds.

The occupation threatened Allied supply routes to China and directly triggered coordinated economic sanctions by the United States, Britain, and the Netherlands that sharply escalated tensions between Japan and the United States.
