Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates and German republic proclaimed

On November 9, 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated and revolutionary leaders proclaimed a German republic amid widespread unrest.

The collapse of the imperial government opened the way for German negotiators to seek an armistice and fundamentally altered the diplomatic landscape confronting Wilson and the Allies.
