Macon's Bill No. 2 signed into law

President James Madison signed Macon's Bill Number 2, reopening American commerce while offering exclusive trade privileges to whichever of Britain or France first repealed its restrictions on U.S. shipping.

Macon's Bill No. 2 signed into law

The law replaced the Non-Intercourse Act and became the centerpiece of U.S. neutral-trade strategy, using economic incentives to try to secure maritime rights and helping set the diplomatic trajectory that contributed to the lead-up to the War of 1812.
