Mussolini proclaims the Italian Social Republic (Republic of Salò)

On September 23 Benito Mussolini, backed by Nazi Germany after his rescue, proclaimed the Italian Social Republic (commonly called the Republic of Salò) in northern Italy.

The proclamation created a German-supported fascist puppet state that deepened Italy's division, legitimized German occupation in the north, and intensified partisan and Allied efforts to defeat Axis forces in Italy.
