National Prohibition goes into effect (Eighteenth Amendment enforcement begins)

At 12:01 a.m. the Eighteenth Amendment and the Volstead Act came into force nationwide, criminalizing the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors in the United States.

Prohibition inaugurated a sweeping constitutional and social change with wide economic and legal consequences, placing new enforcement burdens on the federal government during Wilson's presidency.
