Nazi German troops enter Austria, initiating the Anschluss

On March 12, 1938, German forces crossed the Austrian border and quickly took control, beginning the Anschluss that would formally annex Austria into Nazi Germany.

The Anschluss was a major act of European aggression that intensified the international crisis Roosevelt's administration faced and shaped subsequent U.S. diplomatic and security responses to Nazi expansion.
