North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) enters into force

NAFTA officially went into effect on January 1, 1994, creating a tariff-free trading zone between the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

As a major trade liberalization measure carried by the Clinton administration, NAFTA reshaped North American trade, spurred economic integration, and became a central policy and political reference point in debates over globalization and jobs.
