Northridge earthquake strikes Los Angeles area

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Northridge neighborhood of Los Angeles on January 17, causing extensive damage, dozens of deaths and widespread disruption and prompting a major federal disaster response.

The quake was one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history, triggered significant FEMA-led federal relief and recovery actions by the Clinton administration, and led to changes in building codes and emergency preparedness policy nationwide.
